Workshop Objectives:
In this workshop, we will present an introduction to the following topics pertaining to measurement in studies of health disparities:
- Issues of the conceptual and psychometric adequacy and equivalence of self-report measures in studies that compare health levels across diverse groups, or that compare models of determinants of health,
- Approaches for reviewing the adequacy and equivalence of existing measures in diverse population groups for possible use in a specific study, including a discussion of issues of translation, readability, and working with low-literacy populations,
- The use of qualitative methods to pretest potential measures in diverse groups such as behavioral coding, cognitive testing, and random probes, and
- An overview of classical test theory methods for evaluating the psychometric adequacy of measures within a diverse group, and for comparing the psychometric characteristics across diverse groups.
Examples from our collective work will be provided, and implications for research will be discussed.
